Executor
The person named in a will to carry it out: file the will with the probate court, gather assets, pay debts and taxes, and distribute what remains to the beneficiaries. Many states now call this role the "personal representative."
What it means
An executor is a fiduciary — legally bound to act in the estate's best interest. Duties include probating the will, inventorying assets, notifying creditors, paying valid debts and final taxes, and distributing the estate per the will's terms. Wills commonly name a backup executor and may waive the bond requirement or request independent administration where state law allows.
